RECOMMENDED READING: ‘PLANTS AND FLOWERS OF MADEIRA’

Abroad, Madeira is also known as the ‘Floating Garden’ or the ‘Garden Island’.

Those who already have visited the island know how appropriate these names are.

Yet, with the multiplicity of flowers, plants and trees, both endemic and originating from every corner of the planet, it becomes quite difficult to name each one, even for those who are knowledgeable in botanics.

That is where this book comes in handy. Covering over 400 plants, all of them pictured in colour, each page depicts one species, showing several parameters that will help you identifying it: flowering season, common plant height, origin, botanic family and the altitude range where each plant grows.

Apart from its scientific name in Latin, you can find common names in different languages. There are two multilingual editions: Portuguese and English are common to both. One adds French, German, Dutch and Spanish. The other one covers Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish.

To ease your search, the book features a comprehensive index in each language.

If you want to buy this book, you can find it at most souvenir and bookshops in downtown Funchal and around the island. If you are living abroad, it is available from some online shops, including Amazon (UK).
